What is Microsoft Copilot?

During 2023 Microsoft introduced AI functionality in in many parts of their products and services and started to call these parts "copilots". From a marketing perspective, there are branded products such as Copilot for Microsoft 365, Copilot for Sales and even a product name called Microsoft Copilot. Microsoft Copilot is the new name for Bing Chat/Bing Chat Enterprise, see the announcement: Announcing Microsoft Copilot, your everyday AI companion. From a concept perspective, copilots have different categories, such as embedded copilots, copilots as add-ons and build your own. These categories are all explained in the video Understanding copilots at Microsoft.

Seeing copilot definitions the words Large Language Models (LLMs) and cognitive tasks are often used. In the article AI Explained the following definition is seen:

A copilot is an application that uses modern AI/LLMs like GPT-4 to assist people with complex (cognitive) tasks.

On the Microsoft Adoption pages the concept is explained as follows:

Microsoft offers a variety of Copilot assistants that can be adopted to enhance user productivity and creativity. Copilot is integrated into various Microsoft platforms and products, providing a more interactive and efficient digital workspace.

Microsoft Copilot Studio

This is where you can build your own copilots. In November 2023, Microsoft Power Virtual Agents became a part of the Microsoft Copilot Studio.

Copilot in Dynamics 365

Copilot in/for Sales

Copilot for Sales is the current name of the stand-alone copilot to be used with Dynamics 365 Sales. Formerly known as Sales Copilot and even further back knows as Viva Sales. Copilot in Sales refers to the built-in copilot functionality in Dynamics 365 Sales. Copilot for Sales refers to the stand-alone copilot for Dynamics 365 Sales.

Copilot in/for Service

Copilot in Service refers to the built-in copilot functionality in Dynamics 365 Customer Service. Copilot for Service refers to the stand-alone copilot for Dynamics 365 Service.
